Squirrels must have Velcro toes
the way they climb the trees.
And the way they climb back down,
nose first, is a mystery to me.
They jump full speed from branch to branch
with a chattering Tarzan yell.
And they just moved into my attic, sigh…
Damn their furry little butts to ….

Rhymed and unrhymed, form or free, this is where the poetry lives.
Human Nature
We either imitate nature or
insulate ourselves from her.
We live in warm caves with potted plants
and wood panelling on the walls.
We fence our yards to keep out wild animals
and share our homes with the descendants of
wolves and lions.
All of us nicely domesticated.
We tell our children stories of clever mice
who wear clothes and can speak
and then we bait the mouse traps.
You can take the human out of nature but
you can’t take nature out of the human.

Veterans’ Haiku
Honour dead soldiers
by caring for the live ones
who come home broken.

All Things
All things do not come,
neither to the one who waits
nor to the one who seeks.
All things do not care
how patient or
how curious you are.
All things are just things
after all.

Just Peachy
Blanch and flay
pull the stone away
slice and save for another day.
When winter winds fret
and you almost forget
the sweetness of summer I`m willing to bet
those peaches will melt
winter`s snowy white pelt,
and remind you again how August once felt.

life loves an encore.

Perils of the Overachiever
Never go first down the garden path
life’s a journey, it isn’t a race,
and the person who’s first is always the one
who gets cobwebs in her face.

Truth and the World
Listen and the world
will whisper truth in your ear.
Truth sings in our hearts.
Observe and the world
will show you truth in small things.
Truth walks along side.
Breathe in and the world
exhales truth in every breeze.
Truth perfumes the air.
Swallow and the world
will fill you with truth’s sweetness.
Truth will sustain you.
Reach out and the world
will stand still and wait for you.
Truth will touch you back.

The Comforting Sun
Sunrise blaze a trail
out of my long, sleepless night.
Lull me back to sleep.

Breathing Free
The best things in life are fleeting;
the savour of a home grown melon, dripping sweetness,
the caress of a soft chinook wind on a winter cold face,
the oriole’s song vibrating down the ravine,
the prismatic gems on a raindrop studded lawn,
the good earth breathing humus into the dusk.
The best things in life are fleeting and worthy
of remembrance so that in dark moments
we may close our eyes, hold them close,
and breathe free again.
