The Dream

I had a dream last night
of walking down a familiar street yet
the houses were old and gray
and I was young.
The air was cool and unbreathed and
seethed with ideas unthought,
dreams only starting to prickle the edge
of consciousness.

I had a dream last night
of a familiar place in an unfamiliar time.
Night fell like a silent blanket and no light shone
but the ghosts of candles
lighting the path for late wayfarers,
and the liquid glow of starlight and moonlight
playing on edges and dabbling ponds.

I had a dream last night,
then I awoke to the song of the wild goose calling
goodbye.

Water Dreams

Streams and streams of water dreams
trickle through my brain it seems
that last night I imbibed far too much tea.
Brooks that babble, waves that crash,
water canteens slosh and splash
and wake me in the night quite urgently.

But not before they inundate
my poor brain with unrelated
images of soggy situations.
And just before the geyser blows
my eyes pop open and I know
the bathroom is my ultimate destination.

Water dreams, oh, water dreams
in glorious variety team
and wreak nocturnal havoc ‘pon my pons
My rem in remnants, my id all irked
I wake with hypnagogic jerk
bathroom bound again, with a yawn.

Three times, four? I can’t recall
how many trips made down the hall,
how many times those dreams awakened me.
Bleary with sleep fragmentation
I swear in weary exasperation
next time I’ll go easy on the tea.

The Cat Soleeta Lee

Last night I dreamed I met a cat
named Soleeta Lee,
and something in her manner seemed
familiar to me.

To look into her eyes which were hazel
like my own
was to look into a mirror and find
someone else at home.

Now it seems less like a dream and
more a memory
of another life when I may have been
the cat, Soleeta Lee.

What I Dreamed

When I was a kid, my dreams for the future
included flying cars, and world peace,
and vacations at resorts on the moon or in
domes on the bottom of the ocean.
I dreamed of terraforming Mars and boarding
a spaceship as easily as I would step onto a bus.

What a rip.
I guess I stuck around long enough
to see a lot of dreams get left behind like
stacks of old ‘Popular Science’ magazines.

I guess the important dreams were the ones
I didn’t realize I had until they came true;
healthy children,
good friends,
and you.
You’re not what I dreamed of.
You’re better.

The Door

Asleep I am aware
Awake I can ignore
And in the drowsy place between
the two there is a door.

I know it leads to answers but
I cannot seem to find
the strength or the ambition
to unlock my mind.

Or maybe I’m afraid
of what’s behind the door.
Asleep I am aware
Awake I can ignore.

Waves

The waves are higher now
they have eaten the sand at my feet
and knocked me down day after day.
But not this day.
This day I paddle out to meet them,
harness them, ride them, become them
feel their power, see their course,
and when they fall I will have learned to
cast myself forward into dreams,
knocking down obstacles,
but, unlike the waves and
unlike the obstacles,
I will not fall.

Someday Something

I wish I had a dollar for every time I said
“I’d like to do that some day,” then walked away instead.
I’d be a millionaire by now and prob’ly could afford
to do those wistful things I once thought of then ignored.

I’d have financial freedom but would I, in fact, be free
or would there be more obstacles standing between me
and the wondrous “someday something” that led me on to dream
of doing something special, of swimming straight upstream

to the land of ‘someday somethings’,  to a world where ‘maybe’ rules,
where dreams are just a starting point and wonder is the tool
you use to build your own world, one that fills and fits you
where maybe one day you’ll look back and suddenly it hits you.

It wasn’t all that hard to reach, you didn’t need the dollars.
The world you left behind is getting smaller now, and smaller
until the world of wonder becomes reality
and the world of ‘must’ and ‘have to’ is lost in faded dreams.
