He Wore a Poppy
He never talked about the war.
He had scars
but some didn’t show on the outside.
He wore a poppy
but never went to the Legion.
He had medals that he was proud of
but he never displayed them.
I remember taking them to Show and Tell in grade one.
He never talked about the war.
But even as a child I knew
it followed him like a shadow
so he faced the light of love
and family and community and
kept the shadow behind him.
We put a poppy on his coffin.

Thanks for reminding us in your writing about the poppy; the significance of Sunday, November 11th: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_poppy
I think of my dad often, but Remembrance Day seems to be a time for special reflection. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, I agree. Every day is a good day for reflecting and remembering. Here’s my lastest posting. I hope you like this painting of the poppy as much as I do: http://marygilmartin.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/art-georgia-okeeffe-1887-1985/
I love Georgia O’Keeffe’s flowers – the painting is gorgeous.
thanks
You are most welcome, my friend.
